Preview columns

I have a table where one of the columns is defined as a preview.
When the data is initially loaded, the preview columns are all null so nothing shows.

What I then tried to do was set the itemtext property of a preview column and OI just closed down altogether.
Is this a limitation on preview types? They can't be modified using ItemText?

    We have this feature in use in several applications, so this crashing is truly unexpected. I will need your table setup code to see what might be at play here.
