Windows 10 not connecting to SMTP server

Using mail utility version 2.0.2. Just upgraded the server to Windows 10, but now I get the following error message back from the utility:

The message could not be sent to the SMTP server. The transport error code was 0x80040217. The server response was not available

I have double-checked the username and password (and logged into the account via a browser). The configuration has not changed (other than upgrading the OS).

It is trying to connect to smtp.gmail.com using port 465.

Any ideas?

  • This is a general error when communication to/from the email server is being blocked. Double check all your firewall settings, especially since you just upgraded. This error can also be the result of a bad username or password or the email server has disabled access for some reason. Some people get this because the server thought they were spamming. For gmail, some people have had to enable the less secure apps setting for things to work.
