Software system licencing

If when ‘selling’ a software system, you charge a setup fee and a monthly licence fee, are you ‘allowed’ to stop the software from working if the monthly licence is not paid.

  • I'm not an attorney and I definitely don't know international or local law for Australia, but in the US I've always understood that you can disable software but you can't prohibit access to data.
  • I was thinking along the same lines.
I assume then that means you can view but not add\update.
  • They way I normally see it implemented is that the customer can view and export their data. So some form of reporting is provided. Typically we just negotiate a cost of exporting all data into some common format (e.g., CSV) and then all responsibility is left to the customer to do what they want with the data.
